Remote Controlled Airplanes Airshow: Andersonville, GA

One of the largest remote controlled airplane shows in the United Ststes is held in Andersonville, GA. Andersonville, Georgia is probably best known for the prison camp run by the Confederate Army during the Civil War. A movie and many TV shows have been made on the subject.
Most RC pilots developed a love of flying at an early age. Many of these youngsters carried this love for airplanes with them into their adult lives. Just like my son did, a lot of them joined clubs. My son's first club was in Jacksonville, FL and he joined at the age of 35. I went with him to a club meet in Jacksonville and was totally enthralled. These clubx and meets require a good bit of space and such was the case when a club in Atlanta decided to have an airshow. After searching around quite a bit, they found a facility in Andersonville that was large enough to allow them to hold meets.
"We have 450 pilots here. And each pilot brings 8 to 10 planes.
So we could have somewhere close to four to five thousand airplanes out
here at the event. During the event, this "airport" is even busier than the massive airport in Atlanta, recognized by the FAA to be the busiest airport in the US.
While most remote control plane flying is done in the search for fun, there is one plane here this weekend that is sponsored by the US Army. The army's remote controlled plane is made of a flexible carbon and fiber mix. The army has laid out an important mission for this model.
A U. S. Army spokesperson says the mission of this Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) is able to provide: "Surveillance of things that they can't see or they need to know what's going on somewhere."
Army personnel can easily deploythe plane anytime it is needed.
All that is required to launch the plane is to get it out, plug in the battery, get a GPS link and take off,.
One of the things that makes RC flying so much fun is that whatever you do can be applied to a fullsized aircraft. The laws of aerodynamic flight apply to scale models exactly as they apply to the full sized airplanes."The aerodynamic part of it was so much easier after learning RC when flying Blackhawks. You can apply it out to full scale. It's no different," he said.
As you can see, this popular hobby can
be more than just something fun to do on the weekend.
