Airplane Models and Model Airplane Kits

When I was growing up, the only model airplanes that could be found were those made from balsa wood with tissue paper stretched to cover the fuselage and the wings. I was never able to get the tissue part of the building process right.  I had nobody around where we lived that did it or was interested in building one. There was no such thing as a remote controlled airplane kit such as you see today.  

My son has built several planes, having just finished one he got as an early Christmas present.  Colin is into building remote controlled planes (RC Planes).  The one he just finished looked to me like a Piper Tri-Pacer.  He had no idea what it was, just that it was yellow.

Back in my younger days, I took flying lessons in a Piper Tri-pacer and a Cessna 150.   This was to satisfy a dream I had for years.  At the time, I was using my veterans benefits to pay for the lessons.  I never got to the point of getting the pilots license but I accumulated about 30 hours solo time in the Cessna 150.  I had a scare one day that caused me to give up the flying. 

Now with all of the models they have of remote controlled planes,rc jets, remote controlled helicopters and even boats, I could probably scratch that itch with the models as a substitute.  Unfortunately, at this state of my life, I can no longer afford them so I will have to get my thrills through my son flying his models.  That will be better than nothing.   Now, I am hoping to see an rc jet bomber.
