When I was growing up, the thought of a model that could be controlled underwater never entered my head.  I have just finished viewing video about remote controlled submarines (RC Submarines).  That blows my mind.  When I consider that the US Navy has a transmitter called Jim Crick that is supposed to reach submerged submarines.  The problem with this is the transmitter has to be extremely highpowered and on a low frequency.  It is received by ship or sub telegraph and is painfully slow, letter by letter.  Today's RC transmitters use UHF frequencies and have a range of around 100 feet.

There are radio controlled models representing just about any full-size vehicle that you could imagine (and a few you cannot). That includes vessels for underwater exploration. RC Submarines vary in size from little bathtub or aquarium toys for in-home exploration to submarines that are as big as your bathtub designed for deep sea (or at least deep lake) exploration.  The submarine model hobby includes both static models meant only for display and radio controlled models that are intended for fun on and beneath the water. Like different RC vehicles, RC submarines have a hand-held controller that communicates with an on-board receiver enclosed in an exceedingly water-tight compartment. Though the on-board electronics are built to be water-tight and submersible, the controller could not be. So you shouldn't jump into the water to rescue your rc submarine with controller in hand.

RC submarines may be purchased as Ready-to-Run (RTR) models or you can build RC submarines from kits (unassembled) or from scratch. The two main groups of RC submarines are toy subs and hobby-grade scale models. There also are RC working subs that come back in radio controlled and remote management models. These research vessels are used for underwater photography and scientific exploration and are typically engineered for a particular purpose. These aren't your typical RC submarines that you get at Wal-Mart or your friendly hobby shop. Ready-to-Run RC Submarines embrace both novelty toys for children larger ones for not-so-small boys. This includes many elaborate RC submarines which will provide hours of entertainment for adults.

At the lower end of the value scale, these submersible toys typically have a limited range, might or might not appear as if real, full-size submarines and embrace different submersible toys like RC sharks. Basic functions embody mounting and down (diving) and turning. Not all toy subs are meant for kids. Fancier subs with more authentic detailing, bigger range, static diving systems, and upgradeable options can generally set you back several hundred bucks. These RTR subs might be sold at toy stores also hobby outlets and online.  The Ocean Scout Micro RC Submarine is an example of a toy RC Submarineappropriate to be used in a bathtub, aquarium, or tiny pool.

The Motorworks SeaWolf Class Submarine is another pool or pond-sized sub created to seem like real U.S. Navy subs. Clear the pool with an RC Shark that even features a controller which will go underwater. Hobby-Grade Scale Model RC submarine are (usually) accurate models of past or present military or research vessels or fantasy subs like those from books or movies. Not only do they have the design of their full-size counterparts, many also have abundantly more realistic options together with torpedoes propelled by compressed gas, lighting and working hatches, ballast or dive tanks that take on and expel water to facilitate diving and resurfacing (static diving systems). Usually these types of RC submarines are built from kits or from scratch though some could come in almost RTR versions. The value of building these RC subs can climb into the thousands of dollars.
