RC Gliders-- The Essence of Flying

Glideers really came to the public notice during the invasion of Normandy on D-Day in World war II.  Many of these planes met a disastrous fate as they crashed in to trees, lakes and other solid objects.  Glider pilots hold that the only true form of flying is glider or wind powered flight.
The same thing holds true for the RC gliders of today.  It is true that radio controlled glider flight is flight in its simplest form.  These aircraft are a great way to enjoy peaceful and relaxing (not to mention, comparatively inexpensive) rc flying.  Most rc gliders utilize 2 channel radio, with control to either the rudder and elevator or the ailerons and elevator.The rudder and elevator control is by far the most commonly used, but ailerons are better for the aerobatic gliders and 'combat' gliders.  Those types of RC gliders require good manueverability.

RC gliders like the Thunder Tiger Windstar, are very stable in the air, and easy to fly. They can be flown from a slope or flat land with a launching mechanism such as a bungee system. RC glider flying with the Windstar is a peaceful experience when compared to that of a powered RC airplane. Theflying speeds of gliders is much slower than those of powered airplanes,  The longer reaction time you have with the rc gliders makes them much easier to pick up for the beginner. The high  wing of the Windstar gives it excellent stability characteristics leaving you with an aircraft that is very forgiving.  Similar to the flight characteristics of a small private plane, where if you take your hands from the controls, it will fly in a straight and level flight pattern, assuming it is properly trimmed.  The large wing area generates large amounts of lift, so given wind conditions you can stay aloft long past the time a powered plane would have to be brought down and refueled or recharged as in an electric rc airplane.
