Remote controlled boats powered by battery are quite popular. They are fast. You can expect them to reach 15-20 MPH out of the box.
Electric powered boats have the advantage of being quiet. They can be used in areas where the nitro boats would not be allowed. Remote control boats nitro powered boats are similar to gasoline powered RC boats with the difference being the fuel. In a gas powered boat, the fuel is a mixture of gasoline and oil, similar to that of a 2 cycle lawnmower or weed trimmer. The nitro boats fuel is a blend of nitro / lubricating oil/methanol.
Remote Controlled Sail Boats
Remote controlled sail boats are not particularly fast but if it is relaxation you are after nothing beats the quiet of the remote controlled sail boats.

Speed
If you have a need for speed, then you want to go with the nitro powered boats. However if you do select a nitro powered remote controlled boat, then you must consider speed, noise, and maintenance. Nitro boats require more space to operate due to the speeds they reach, approaching the 30-40MPH range.
Also consider the noise factor. There are areas where nitro boats are not allowed because of the loud noise. Check with your local city ordinance or village homeowners association.
Finally, nitro boats have engines that require more maintenance than do the other boats. A user must have some tuning skills. Unlike electric boats where you simply plug in the charged battery and you are ready to go, a nitro marine engine has a carburetor, fuel filter, air filter, cooling head, and a tuned pipe. All of these must be working properly before your engine will run. The tuning conditions are also weather dependent making the nitro powered remote controlled boat more difficult to operate.
