Flying radio controlled airplanes allows its many fans to experience the thrill of flying without ever leaving the ground.  I have always been fascinated with the though of flying.  I have a mild case of acrophobia (Fear of heights).  I can work from a ladder if I have to but I am not comfortable doing it.  Surprisingly, flying in a small plane does not bother me.  In fact, to many years ago to brag about, I took flying lessons.

Several years ago, my son joined a radio controlled airplane flying club.  They frequently hold meets on the weekend where it is possible to see all types of RC planes from radio controlled helicopters to radio controlled jets.  At this meet, I saw a scale model of a Boeing 707 (4 engine jet plane) fly over and take-off and land.  The power for this plane was 4 mini jet engines and they sound exactly like the real thing.  I was fascintaed by this whole event.  So much so, that I asked for and got an RTF (Ready to fly) radio controlled helicvopter for my birthday.  That was indeed cool and for something to be cool to a 75 year old, it really is cool.  YouTube has hundreds of videos of radio controlled airplanes and RC helicopters.
