Having Fun With RC Helicopters
Remote controlled helicopters have been around for some time. Now they have indoor rc heliocpters. Somehow, that really seems a stretch. Can something as hard to control as a helicopter really function indoors?
Remote controlled helicopter technology is at a much higher level than that which is used in RC cars or rc planes. Early on, this hobby was for those with plenty of cash and a willingness to put the time in needed to master the technique of flying these fascinating machines.
As electronic parts are being made smaller and less expensive, the specialized controllers needed to fly these birds became available to the general public and were not reserved for the military, they are now available for RC toys as well.
It has always been considered a disadvantage for larger gas driven models since they need a lot of space and are noisy and polluting. They are also significantly more expensive.
An electric micro helicopter can be flown any time in a limited space. A beginner is advised to practice away from Mom's precious china or delicate antiques. A backyard is perfect especially when you have a day without any wind. After perfecting your skills in theis genre, you can move your combat missions to the living room.
Expect to hit a few objects when you first start out. The tail rotor of the rc helicopter will need some trimming to keep the bird from spinning. In the course of this experiments you will probably break few rotor blades. I guess that's why they sell spare rotors in six packs!
One characteristic you may not like is the short battery life on the smallest models, but if you have an iPhone you already are familiar with short battery life. In order to save weight the battery of necessity was kept small. They are usually charged by connecting the heli to the remote control and it usually takes about fifteen minutes for a full charge. After that you can fly from about four to eight minutes.
The larger models of rc helicopters usually have a removable battery that lasts somewhat longer and a separate charger. It is easier to prepare for your flight using this type of arrangement, especially if you have some spare batteries, you can play around for quite some time.
An indoor RC helicopter is probably the first step, after you get some experience you definitely will want to save up for a larger one!
